BeyondTheAux Interviews 7CELSIUS- Generating Jungle Hop Wave!

How did you guys meet and what made you choose jungle music?

DOM

We met at college in Brighton. I was on the songwriting course and wanted a band with me, Haydn and Felix were my favourite at their instruments so I wanted to work with them and we all thought it’d be a great idea to put a band together officially.

What does your creative process look like for you guys?

DOM

Our creative process changes each song. Sometimes we will be in a rehearsal and build a song from the ground-up. This might start with chords/ a drum groove or a bassline. Some times I’ll come to the band with a song already fully written and structured and the boys will add their own instrumental parts to it and just enhance the song. Other times Haydn might have a drum part he came up with and has strong ideas for structure? Or Felix might write a riff we all instantly connect with.

What does jungle mean to you?

DOM

Jungle is a huge inspiration for me, it instantly brings back so many memories.

HAYDYN

I didn’t get it into jungle till very later last year around December time. Around the time we made our first hip hop song with a jungle middle 8 in it. I had no idea about jungle so Felix described it to me as the start of a slipknot song eyeless and that was my only idea of what it was. Until around June-July time I got really into Toni size and too and Jerry, from that point I’ve been really studying it round the drums and have been fascinated by it since.

FELIX

I was introduced to Jungle in my last year of school. The breakbeats, complex rhythms and heavy bass inspire me when writing with the band. LTJ Bukem has been my number one listened to artist of Spotify wrapped for the last 3 years because he is such a pioneer of the genre and he has multiple 10/10 jungle albums in my opinion. It’s not just the rhythmic that I like and take inspiration from it’s also the harmonic content as well, the extended chords are something that I hint towards in our songs.

What are your main inspirations, and how does this feed into your tone?

DOM

Our main inspirations are different for each of us. For me it was Queen who started my journey but I was quickly inspired by writers such as Dave and Mike skinner.

HAYDYN

Main inspirations for the band is definitely roni size - brown paper bag. Another drummer that somewhat does hip hop live drums and a mix of metal is John Otto from limp bizkit. His dancy grooves are just impossible not to bop your head to. Outside of Celsius my top artists are the smiths, tool, Korn and massively Kate bush. The list could go on but I’ll leave it there!

FELIX

I’m also hugely influenced and inspired by classic hip hop so Biggie, Tupac, Nas Ice cube tribe called quest to name a few. The beats, the aesthetic and energy influence me and band especially when it comes to our sound and style.
