Beyond The Aux Interviews MarMan...

What’s your favourite track and what’s the story behind it?

A: Tough one, but I’d probably go with “The Let Down.” There isn’t some deep story behind it — it was more just me venting. The hook basically says, “life’s hard but this rap shit is easy.” What I’m getting at is that I’d often find day-to-day life tough and felt like I was letting people down, but making music always felt like the most natural thing in the world. I made it at a time when I was starting to feel more confident with my production, too. Finishing that track on my own made me realise how good it felt to complete something without bringing in outside producers

When did you start music and what made you start it?

I used to breakdance as a kid, so that got me into Hip-Hop culture early on. When I was a teenager, me and my mates were into graffiti and listened to loads of Rap and Grime. From there it just felt like a natural procession. I started writing lyrics around 15 or 16, and got into making beats a few years after that.

Q: How is being a rapper in Brighton? Has this influenced your music in any way?

Creatively, Brighton has a lot going for it. It can be a beautifully weird and crazy place with many different sides to it. I’m sure my experiences growing up here have bled into my music in a number of ways.

What’s your favourite venue you’ve played at?

I’d say Chalk — mainly because of the size and the acoustics there. As long as the setup’s good and the crowd’s with me, I’m happy. Playing gigs is honestly where I get the most joy out of this whole thing, but really, I’ve probably had more fun freestyling nonsense in someone’s kitchen at 2 a.m. than in any venue

What’s your top 5 songs on Spotify right now?

1. Harvey Whyte- Paranoid

2. Mobb Deep- Against the world

3. Benny the Butcher- 5 to 50

4. JXMESC- out the crib
